fast-switching insulated gate bipolar transistor (igbt) inverters may cause additional bearing currents in the inverter-based drive systems. the high-frequency (hf) circulating bearing current is one of the different types that can be distinguished. it occurs, in addition to the “classical” bearing current, due to the magnetic asymmetries of the large line-fed motors. the inverter-induced hf circulating bearing current follows the same path as the “classical” (low frequency) bearing current, yet its origin is very different. the use of the or the insulated inner bearing seats has been recognized as an effective mitigation technique, but statements on the required thickness of the insulating layer to achieve the intended mitigation are missing.
